“Share to Your Story for an Extra Entry”: How to Actually Count Those

Story-share bonus entries explained: why no tool can verify Story tags, the comment trick, and Pickfetti's host-added bonus entries — the only fair, disclosed way to count them.

"Bonus: share this post to your Story and tag us for an extra entry" is on half the giveaway captions on Instagram — and almost nobody counts those entries properly, because they can't. This guide explains why Story shares are invisible to every giveaway tool, the two honest ways to count them anyway, and how Pickfetti's host-added bonus entries make it work without breaking a verifiable draw.

Key takeaways

  • No third-party tool can see who shared a post to their Story. Story tags are only visible to the tagged account, there's no public API for them, and Stories vanish after 24 hours. Any picker claiming to "verify Story shares" automatically is not telling the truth.
  • The host can see them: every "mentioned you in their story" notification lands in the host's DMs.
  • Way 1 (works with any picker): ask sharers to also comment "shared!" on the post — the comment becomes the countable extra entry.
  • Way 2 (Pickfetti): the host pastes the sharers' usernames into host-added bonus entries; each gets one extra entry, and the proof page discloses them so the draw stays verifiable.

Why Story shares are unverifiable — for everyone

When someone shares your post to their Story and tags you, three things make it uncheckable from the outside: the mention notification goes only to your account; most Stories are visible only to the sharer's followers; and the whole thing disappears in 24 hours. A comment picker reads public comments on a public post — Stories simply aren't part of that world. This is true for Pickfetti and every competitor. The difference is what happens next.

Way 1: the "comment shared!" trick

Phrase the bonus rule as: "Share this to your Story and tag us, then comment 'shared!' below for your extra entry." Now the bonus action produces a comment, and comments are exactly what a picker counts. Run the draw with every qualifying comment = one entry (rather than one entry per person), and the "shared!" comment is literally the extra ticket. You can spot-check claims against your Story-tag notifications and exclude anyone who fibbed.

This works with any comment picker, including Pickfetti's free tier. Its weakness: it depends on entrants doing a second step, and honest sharers who skip the comment lose their bonus.

Way 2: host-added bonus entries (Pickfetti)

Pickfetti draws have a Bonus entries panel: open your Story-tag notifications, and paste the usernames of everyone who shared. Each username gets exactly one extra entry in the pool. Then:

  • The bonus entries are added before the draw and included in the published entry-list hash — so the random draw provably covers them.
  • The public proof page discloses "N host-added bonus entries (Story shares)" — entrants can see the bonus rule was honored, and that the host didn't quietly pad the pool after seeing a result.
  • If you edit bonus entries after drawing, the previous result is invalidated and clearly must be redrawn — no cherry-picking.
  • Exclusions still apply: the host account and any excluded usernames can't ride in on a bonus entry.

As far as we know, no other no-login picker offers a disclosed, hash-committed way to count Story shares. Tools either ignore the bonus rule or leave hosts merging spreadsheets by hand.

Writing the rule in your caption

Copy-paste and adjust:

🎁 To enter: follow @yourbrand, and comment tagging the friend you'd bring (more comments with different friends = more entries!).
⭐ Bonus: share this post to your Story and tag @yourbrand for one extra entry — we see every Story tag and add them all before the draw.

Saying "we add them before the draw" sets the expectation that the bonus is real and counted — and with the proof page, you can show it was.

What about "like this post" rules?

Same honesty rule: Instagram doesn't expose complete liker lists, so nobody can verify likes at scale — including us. Keep the like as a soft ask, and hang the actual entries on comments (verifiable) plus Story shares (visible to you, countable as bonus entries).
